IPL Suspension Sparks Discussion on Relocation
New Delhi [India] - Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan has raised the possibility of relocating the remaining matches of the 18th Indian Premier League (IPL) to the UK. This suggestion comes after the tournament was put on hold for a week due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
On Friday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the suspension of the IPL for a week, citing the increasing border tensions between the two countries.
With uncertainty surrounding the future of the league, Vaughan shared his thoughts on social media, proposing that the tournament could be completed in the UK. He noted that this arrangement would allow Indian players to remain in England for their upcoming Test series, which is set to commence on June 20.
“I wonder if it’s feasible to finish the IPL in the UK... We have all the venues, and the Indian players can then stay on for the Test series... Just a thought?” Vaughan tweeted.
The IPL's suspension follows the abrupt cancellation of a match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala, which was halted midway through the first innings on Thursday night. Fans were informed of the cancellation and instructed to leave the venue, while both teams returned to their accommodations.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that a revised tournament schedule will be released after discussions with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the ongoing TATA IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week. Updates regarding the new schedule and venues will be provided after a thorough evaluation of the situation in consultation with the necessary authorities and stakeholders,” Saikia stated.
